About Kumon
The Kumon Method
began as the result of a simple episode of daily life:
A concerned mother happened to find an arithmetic test
paper in her 2nd grade son's pocket. After seeing his son's test results,
the boy's father thought for some time before starting to create worksheets
containing math problems. Each evening he assiduously made a new worksheet
for his son to solve.
That father was Toru
Kumon. At the time Toru Kumon was a high school math teacher. It so happens
that for some time he had felt "the true role of an educator is to help
each child achieve their potential to the fullest. And for that to happen
it is important to instruct children in a way that allows them to learn
on their own."
Toru Kumon kept this idea firmly in mind when he began
making worksheets for his son, devising the work sheets in his own original
way so that his son would be able to work through them on his own. By
studying the worksheets developed by his father for 30 minutes each
day, young Takeshi Kumon began to make rapid progress in his studies.
